The Victorian fascination with all things exotic and oriental manifested itself through a variety of artistic expressions, including literature, painting and architecture. One of the obvious ways to capture the ambience of the “mysterious East” closer to home was to decorate with it, something 19th century decorators and homeowners would revel in!
The New York based Alfred Peats & Co. appealed to this popular taste for the Orient by illustrating a “Moorish” frieze and fill set in the background of an 1899 advertisement for their “Prize Wall Paper”. Also included in this intriguing ad were some suitably-attired models just for effect…
