Apartment Therapy House Tour 2009

Posted on | June 15, 2009 | 1 Comment

We were thrilled to see an entry into the 2009 Apartment Therapy House Tour that featured some gorgeous photos of one of our Art Deco wallpapers “Zenith“, in Golden Olive. The apartment is the home of Filmmaker Jeremy Kasten and its located in one of Los Angeles’ most beautiful Deco-era structures, the historic Eastern Columbia Building. The turquoise terra cotta building, built in 1930, recently received a multi-million dollar “makeover” in 2006 and now contains some of Los Angeles’ most desirable urban living spaces.

Kasten used the paper at wainscot level around the main living space capping it with a dark rail and that, combined with the dark baseboard, all makes for a very rich effect. The photos really show off the reflective papers and coupled with all of Kasten’s artifacts and collectibles it makes for one really beautiful environment. The photography from the post is the work of Jason Redmond.

And how about this amazing floor lamp with the integrated clock!

The general idea Mr. Kasten has, recreating the elegance of Deco, is there but I am a little bit nervous about the taxidermy and the shivery Dr. Phibes feel of the place. Deco was cool, not creepy. Of course, I do not have the dark and deep imagination this remarkable fellow has, nor the $$$, so I willingly give him marks for originality. For me, Deco is about comfortable elegance and beautiful theatricality. I think of awful late fourties horror films, when I see this. Good lighting effects and super use of the wallpaper and trim are in evidence, but I sure couldn’t stay the night here. My dad remarked once that Art Deco reminded him of an old funeral home. In this instance, he is right. Mwah ha ha ha ha!
